Dear 6th Grade Students and Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Christine Salzman and I will be teaching sixth grade Math and Science. I grew up in the Northwest Suburb of Arlington Heights. I have one older brother and two younger sisters. After I graduated high school, I knew I always wanted to be a teacher, especially Middle School Mathematics, so I attended Illinois State University. I was offered my first teaching job in Buffalo Grove as a sixth grade math teacher. The next year, I was a substitute for students in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade general and bilingual classrooms. I am not fluent in Spanish, but want to be and would love your help with this goal. I moved to Kansas City, Missouri for two years to teach fourth and then fifth grade. This past summer I moved back to Chicago and got married in June. I have been preparing for the year to start this past month and cannot wait for the first day!

Since this is my first year at Erie, I am very excited to meet and get to know you and your families. I have heard so many wonderful things about what happens at Erie and cannot wait to create our own experiences this year. I hope to share my passion of math by creating fun and innovating ways to tackle the concepts we will learn. Science is also jammed-packed of hands-on units that will challenge you to think outside the box and work in groups to solve problems. My goal is to connect every concept to real-world situations and help students understand why every concept will add to their success in the future.

Students will be given homework in math every day. It is critical for students to keep up with completing their work and if they have any questions to always ask. I will be available at school, before or after, as well as by email. I do check my email in the evening if there are questions about homework.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Student Materials:

1.5 inch binder, sharpened pencils, 2 notebooks (Science and Math)

I look forward to working with you and your family so we can continue building your foundation to a successful future.

Sincerely,

Christine Salzman
