Erie Parents and Students,

Hello! My name is Kim Kays and I'm very happy to be returning as the music teacher for my third year at Erie! I will also be taking on a new role this year as the High School Placement Coordinator. I will be working one-on-one with the 8th graders and their families to guide them through the high school application and selection process.

I play the piano, saxophone, sing, and dance and have been teaching music for seven years. I've also traveled the world and have been to 30 countries! I've been Swing Dancing for the past 2 years and am now on a competitive team and travel around the United States for competitions. I hope to bring these rich experiences into my classroom.

I will give my best to my students every day and expect the same from them. I expect my students to be ready and be respectful. What does this look like in music class? I expect them to come prepared with supplies and be ready to be active. Music is a hands-on class, so participation is a must! Students are expected to treat others with respect and kindness. I want my students to feel comfortable singing, dancing, playing, and experimenting.

Students will be playing both rhythm and melody instruments, singing, and dancing in class every week. The fourth and fifth graders will be learning the recorder. Middle School students will take a deeper look into more contemporary music and it's place in society including American folk music, jazz, rock, pop, hip-hop, rap, as well as music careers.  We will be offering a lot of music-related after school activities as well. So, there are lots of ways for you student to get involved and perform!

I'm very excited about the upcoming year at Erie. If anyone in your family plays an instrument or sings, please let me know. I'd love to get families involved in our music curriculum. If you have any questions, ideas, or concerns feel please contact me!
